An overview on how poker is played:
In Poker, cards are dealt one at a time to form hands of five cards each. Hands, now called the poker hands, can avail by chance the following combinations (in ascending order of value) : a pair; two pairs; three of a kind; a straight - a sequence of five cards of mixed suits; a flush - five cards of the same suit that are not in sequence; a full house - three of a kind and one pair; four of a kind; a straight flush - a sequence of five cards in the same suit; a royal flush - the sequence ten to ace in one suit; and, when wild cards are used in Poker, five of a kind. Poker provides wide array of luck.
A betting process is done to begin each hand in poker. The players remaining in the hand can attempt to improve their hands by means of the draw or draw card in poker. Through this, a poker player can discard one or more cards and obtain from the poker dealer a like number, off the top of the facedown pack. The second round of betting in poker then takes place. Betting in poker ends after two conditions; one, when all who wish to call the highest bet (to bet with equal amount) have done so or two, when all but one player has dropped out.
For case number one, there would be a showdown, and the pot is won by the player holding the best hand. The pot is from the money gambled. On the other hand, the second case results when the remaining player wins whatever the value of the hand. This value needs not be shown. Aside from the common draw poker, other variations of the game include jackpots and stud poker.
The beginning and the means:
Poker is originally a 20-card game. According to, Jonathan Green, poker used only twenty cards: the face cards, aces and tens during the game. Mr. Green, in 1834, first accounted Poker as a cheating game arising from the riverbanks of Mississippi.
Poker, through time, evolved to a 32-card game, then to the modern version of poker which has a deck of 52. In the counting of cards, the two jokers should be excluded.
Until now, the origin of poker is unknown. Some theories state that poker was derived from the magician's "hocus-pocus." Others claim that it is the slang "poke" of the pickpocket. A majority, however, believe that poker is from the French word 'pogue'. Germans assert that it is just a version of their game, 'Pochspiel'.
